The Setareh Feeding Philosophy
Rabbit nutrition does not have to be complicated. The foundation is simple: unlimited hay, fresh water, measured pellets, safe greens, and very limited treats.
When in doubt, keep it simple and let hay do the heavy lifting.
The Foundation: Unlimited Hay
Hay should make up about 80–90% of your rabbit’s daily diet. It supports healthy digestion and helps naturally wear down constantly growing teeth.
Timothy Hay
The classic go-to hay for most adult rabbits.
Orchard Grass
Soft, fragrant, and often loved by picky eaters.
Meadow or Mixed Hay
Adds variety, texture, and natural enrichment.
Alfalfa Hay
Higher in calcium and protein; best for babies and nursing does.
Daily Greens
Fresh leafy greens provide vitamins, hydration, variety, and enrichment.
Lettuces
Romaine, green leaf, and red leaf lettuce are great options.
Fresh Herbs
Cilantro, parsley, dill, and basil are bunny favorites.
Forage Greens
Dandelion greens, carrot tops, plantain, and clover can add variety.
Safe Fruits & Vegetables Handout
Use this quick Setareh Bunnies guide for safe greens, vegetables, and fruits. Always introduce new foods slowly and in small amounts.
Pellets
Pellets are a concentrated source of nutrients, but they are not the main meal. Think of pellets as a supplement, not a substitute for hay.
Choose a plain, high-fiber pellet with no colored bits, seeds, dried fruits, or sugary extras. Look for higher fiber and minimal added sugars.

Fresh water is just as important as hay. Many rabbits drink more easily from heavy bowls than bottles.
Refresh Daily
Clean, fresh water should always be available.
Use Heavy Bowls
Choose sturdy, tip-proof ceramic or weighted bowls.
Watch Outdoor Water
Check for freezing, heat, debris, or spilled bowls.
Treats & Forage
Treats should be fun, natural, and offered sparingly. They can be helpful for bonding, training, and enrichment.
Fruit
Small pieces of apple, banana, or berries as occasional treats.
Forage
Dried greens, flowers, herbs, and homemade forage mixes.
Fresh Herbs
Basil, cilantro, parsley, dill, and rabbit-safe flowers.
Gut Health & Overall Wellness
A healthy gut equals a healthier rabbit. Constant access to hay and water is your best defense against digestive slowdowns and GI stasis.
Consistent Schedule
Feed around the same times daily to support routine.
Daily Hay & Greens
Fresh fiber and hydration support a healthy gut.
Limit Sugars
Too many fruits, starches, or sugary treats can upset digestion.
Supportive Herbs
Plantain, chamomile, and safe forage can be part of a balanced routine.
Feeding Setup
Keep feeding areas simple, clean, and inviting. Rabbits love routine and predictability.
Food Bowl
A heavy ceramic bowl helps prevent tipping.
Hay Rack or Basket
Place hay near the litter box to encourage natural habits.
Greens Plate
A separate plate or hanging bundle keeps greens clean.
Water Bowl
A sturdy bowl supports easy hydration.
